It was 40 years ago this March, that the Providence College Friars, behind two All Americans who were born and raised in Rhode Island, defeated the powerful Maryland Terps - a victory that propelled Coach Dave Gavitt’s Friars into the NCAA “Final Four” with UCLA, Indiana and the team that eventually ended their storybook season – Memphis State.
The entire PC-Maryland game appeared recently on the internet, and – at least for now – fans have the opportunity to watch this high-scoring classic. Also notable is the play-by-play from broadcasting legend Curt Gowdy, who fawns over the 24 1st-half points from Ernie DiGregorio, as well as contributions from Marvin Barnes, Kevin Stacom, Nehru King, Fran Costello and Charlie Crawford. Everyone in Rhode Island is talking about the "Biggest Little Countdown" now playing on local ON DEMAND.
