    Rhody Falls to VCU, 70-64

    Rhode Island kept battling but came up just short in a 70-64 loss to VCU Wednesday. VCU led 43-41 before going on a 19-6 run to open up a 15-point lead with 4:00 remaining in the game. Rhody managed to get within five points three times in the final minutes, but was unable to complete the rally.     After Marvin Johnson gave Niagara the lead with seconds left, Billy Baron hit a tough 3-pointer on the run for what looked to be the game-winner. But after official review, the shot had not left Baron’s fingers in time and was waived off. Baron, the former Rhody guard and son of former URI Coach Jim Baron,  is averaging 16.0 points for Canisius, who are 13-8 .

    Cox Sports’ “Recruiting Insider” Adam Finkelstein appeared on OSN’s Tip Off Show this weekend to provide a report on the Spalding Hoop Hall Classic from Springfield, Massachusetts. The annual tournament boasted several of  the most-recruited basketball players in the entire country, including New Hampton’s Noah Vonleh (recently committed to Indiana), Tilton’s Goodluck Okonoboh,  Jabari Parker (headed for Duke), Mercedes Russell, Aaron Gordon, Dakari Johnson, Jahlil Okafor, Kasey Hill (signed with Florida), and the top-rated prospect in 2013 Andrew Wiggins.

    Emily Sisson Sets World Leading Time in 5000-Meters

    The Providence College men’s and women’s indoor track teams competed at the Boston University Terrier Invitational in Boston, Mass. over this past weekend. Junior Emily Sisson  ran a NCAA and World leading time in the 5000-meters on Friday night.  Sisson placed first in the 5000-meters with a time of 15:44.40.  Fellow classmate Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand) finished fifth with a time of 16:07.56.     Rams fall short at the buzzer

    George Washington’s Joe McDonald hit a baseline jumper with nine seconds left to lead his team to a dramatic 66-65 win over URI televised on OSN from the Ryan Center. The Rams nearly won the game with Xavier Munford 3-point attempt that rimmed out. Freshman Jordan Hare rebounded Munford’s miss and was clearly fouled on the follow-up but there was no call.
