Oksana Goretaya is a senior on the West Warwick track team. She’s been a captain on the team since her sophomore season and her coaches note she’s one of the best they’ve ever had. She also writes for the school paper, plays two other sports and is in the band among other things. Goretaya will take her talents to Brown University in the fall and the sky is the limit for this student.
East Greenwich High School has been awarded Most Outstanding in Athletics for the year 2012. The award is not only based on sports, but team service and academics. The Avengers had a very successful school year with multiple state championships as well as multiple community outreach events.
Senior Hannah Schilke and her sister freshman Rachel Shilke both play lacrosse for Westerly High School. They both also volunteer as junior firefighters. They have been helping out in the local community their entire lives and both sisters agree that they have learned a lot from their firefighter training.
David Hopkins, a pitcher at East Greenwich High School, has overcome adversity to become the leader he is today. Hopkins battled cancer and is now the number one pitcher on the Avengers’ staff. Joe Kayata caught up with the senior in this week’s edition of the Captain’s Corner.
Angelo Pizzi of East Providence High School was recently mic’d up for a game against Westerly. Although the Townies were on the losing end of a 5-3 score, Pizzi was proud of his team’s efforts. Take a look at the game through his perspective.
